BUCHANAN REMAINS ON MESSAGE

After two days of listening to R's and D's in the House on the symbolic resolutions in support of Israel, I am no more clear what our nation's official strategic policy is in the Middle East. I do not dispute that we have a strategic interest in supporting Israel, and I am okay with establishing our own military might in the region, but for me there has always been a major disconnect between what our objectives and reasons probably are, and what our leaders say they are. I think our enemies understand our motives better than our citizens do. I think an argument can be made that this is "our war," but I don't hear that argument being articulated in the political rhetoric.

In a signed editorial, "It's Our War," William Kristol calls for America to play her rightful role in this war by "countering this act of aggression by Iran with a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. Why wait?"

"Why wait?" Well, one reason is that the United States has not been attacked. A second is a small thing called the Constitution. Where does George W. Bush get the authority to launch a war on Iran? When did Congress declare war or authorize a war on Iran?

I think it is very true yet little known to Americans that our enemies understand our motives better than our own people do. Most Americans don't really know why we are fighting in the Middle East and think all can be solved if we simply set a timetable for withdrawl.

Even people who are somewhat tuned in to what is at stake are constantly mislead by our mainstream press' interpretation of the action. For example, we are constantly reminded that Hezbollah is funded by Iran and Syria. Nowhere is it mentioned how much money the USA gives to Israel for defense. We are not simply verbally supporting a supposedly wronged country - Israel is a vital cog in our national interest and disarming Hezbollah is something in which we have invested good money over several decades.

Also, for those libs who live and die by what the UN decrees, in 2000, the UN drew up borders in that region which alloted Israel the disputed Chebaa Farms area which Hezbollah is trying to get back for Syria. When the militants crossed that border to snatch Israel soldiers then ambushed the troops that came after them, how is that not an act of terrorism? They are getting the ass-whooping they have coming.

Israel is punishing Lebanon for not enforcing the UN resolution to disarm Hezbollah and take control of their own borders. We punished Iraq for not living up to UN resolutions to disarm. Everyone in America is all for UN resolutions so long as they are never enforced. It's nice to have a prez with a backbone rather than simply espousing inconvenient truths.
