Amen E, it is odd. I think part of the problem is instant communication anywhere on the globe. It enables these idiotic buearcrats to micromanage a war in ways that FDR never could or would (can you imagine Patton getting emails or cell phone call, "Stop! Don't take Palermo!" He'd probably taken it anyway.
