ABC News online, quoting President Bush from his appearance this morning on Good Morning America:
"We've gotta get a handle on this from the human dimension, first and foremost," Bush said.
Note the editorial decision to quote Bush as saying "gotta" rather than the clear meaning, "got to." Is there any point to that other than to diminish the president? Would they quote Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or John McCain that way?
The article makes prominent mention of the fact that Bush just returned ("two days early" -- implication: not fast enough) from a monthlong vacation. I struggle to make any connection between the length of his vacation and his comments relating to the hurricane.
Meanwhile New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is out doing what Dems do best -- blaming the federal government. He's no Giuliani, that much is clear. I don't remember Rudi telling an international audience he was "goddamn pissed."
Not that Nagin doesn't have a point. I do wonder how FEMA can conduct scenario-planning for this very disaster and then fail as conspicuously as they have here.
The good news, if there is any, is that we are about to learn a lot about how to respond to a major terror attack on a large U.S. city. Let's just hope a special bilateral commission doesn't handle that job.

Yeah, would they dare quote Jackson or Sharpton using the sing songy cadence of their speech patterns?
